The Challenge
The Solution

Marquee is a branding and type design project inspired by the music, culture, and visual identity of the 1960s British Invasion. The project combines a custom display typeface with a concept café that celebrates legendary bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Who, and The Zombies. Drawing inspiration from London's iconic Marquee Club, the brand captures the energy of live music through vintage-inspired typography, graphics, and environmental design.

The challenge was to create a typeface and café brand that felt authentically rooted in 1960s British music culture while remaining relevant to a contemporary audience. Research revealed that many retro-inspired designs rely heavily on clichés, making it difficult to balance historical accuracy with originality. The project also required translating the atmosphere of legendary music venues into a cohesive visual identity that could extend across menus, packaging, and promotional materials.

The solution was the creation of Marquee, a custom typeface developed from an exploration of Gill Sans and inspired by the original Marquee Club signage. By refining the proportions, adding bold curves, and emphasizing condensed letterforms, the font evokes the confidence and rhythm of 1960s concert posters while maintaining modern readability. The accompanying café brand reinforces this identity through vintage color palettes, textured graphics, and music-inspired touchpoints that immerse visitors in the spirit of the British Invasion.
